The end of an Open Workspace

After two months of crazy experiments the Open Workspace project came to an end. After making weird collections of babyfood jars, can constructions an tattoo pictures, Jeroen Wismans decided to put De Kapsalon in a different light yet again. This time with a huge light installation which seems to be from another planet. Two weeks Wismans worked on the sphere construction made of wood, plastic screens and TL lighting.

The Open Workspace came to a warm end with grouphugs, new contacts & ideas for next season. In case you missed Jeroen in De Kapsalon; be sure to drop by in De Kapsalon because Wismans will keep an eye on De Kapsalon during the roadtrip.

De Kapsalon is content with the outcome and can go on the Europe journey in peace. Keep an eye on the website for all the travelling news.

After only 2 days everything we showed during the Willem de Kooning academy graduation exhibition in Las Palmas had to be repacked and moved to the next adventure: Art route by TukTuk. Organized by WdKA graduates Pauline Scheurs and Annelies Bakker.

The entire route from Las Palmas to Katendrecht (where the festival was organized) was transformed to a wild mix of (among other things) performances, installations and karaoke. De Kapsalon made – together with photographer Alina Parigger – a huge tent in one of the old empty shops on the Deliplein in the heart of Katendrecht.

The tent was used to present the project ”Conquering home territories” by Parigger, combined with all the strange furniture of the Kapsalon, a bunch of carefully selected colored rugs and banners. And to top it all of: the tent was used for a live VJ Performance of Tyler Freeman and a concert by 1en1is1 (saxophone Pieterjan de Jager, guitar Laurens Bijl).

De Kapsalon is going over the border!

Art Platform The Barbershop is graduating this summer. But that doesn’t mean the end of everything we build. With the upcoming ending as a student a lot is gonna change but ‘stopping’ is never in the planning.

During the graduation show at Las Palmas (16 – 21 June) De Kapsalon brings you eight months of work but the exhibition is also a start of a new project: the Mobile Kapsalon.

The Mobile Kapsalon is a slick trailer filled with characteristic rugs, lamps, pillow and chairs, so we can re-build the Kapsalon in a quick way everywhere we want. So we can have a chat with artists, hitchhikers, local creative people, work with them and learn from each other.

Last March, the Kapsalon went over the Erasmus Bridge to organize Museum Night, but this time the Kapsalon is going over the border as well! From the end of July till Mid-September we are going to Europe with a car filled with camping gear; the Mobile Kapsalon will be on the trailer hitch with artist Elke Donders in the backseat. The route is still open for suggestions – please let us know.

During the trip the economic crisis will also develop itself. Not only in the Netherlands but in the whole of Europe the governments are trying to reduce government debt by letting the innocent civilians pay. Demonstrations, manifestations and other solidarity actions are on the program as well.

Until Mid-September the Kapsalon is on the road and in the fall we’ll be back on Bloemfontein Street. Multiple plans are already there so it’s gonna be a busy winter. But we never have enough good plans so do you have a great idea? Come by before summer starts!
